The position is full-time, calendar year, limited to 06-30-2018 with extension contingent on funding.

Duties and Responsibilities


Application Deadline: This is an open until filled search. First consideration will be given to applications received by June 14, 2017. Second consideration may be given to applications received by July 6, 2017. Applications received subsequent to second consideration (July 6, 2017) may not be given full consideration.


Perform independent research work in infectious disease immunology within the scope of the iCubed COBRE and Program Project grant portfolio. Develop new assays to characterize pathogen-specific immune responses, in consultation with iCubed and COBRE faculty. Maintain and operate centralized Cell Analysis and Sorting Core facility for COBRE program. Maintain detailed up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook, utilize safe laboratory protocols, and maintain lab in clean and high-functioning condition. DFesign experimental protocols and provide training to laboratory staff in laboratory procedures and use of specialized equipment. Coordinate and manage laboratory staff. Use professional concepts to contribute to the development of the lab technology base and to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways. Contribute to the scientific literature and to collaborative grant applications.


Perform, without direction, complex research work to measure and characterize pathogen-specific innate and adaptive immune responses in human blood and tissue specimens using state-of-the-art immunological techniques.

Develop standardized protocols for immunoassays, cell isolation and other lab practices and train research staff in these procedures.

Develop novel experimental protocols to characterize pathogen-specific human immune responses in support of iCubed and COBRE researchers, based on input from Core users.

Provide advice to the COBRE Program Director, Steering Committee, and External Advisory Committee on cost-effective operation of the COBRE Cell Analysis and Sorting Core and implement their recommendations.

Present experimental results at departmental scientific meetings; document experimental results and methods for publication and grant applications.

Develop and manage laboratory safety training and emergency plans for laboratory personnel.

Maintain laboratory equipment performance; develop operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; arrange equipment replacement, service, and repair. Maintain quality checks on safety of laboratory and insure maintenance of the facilities.

Maintain laboratory supplies inventory; anticipate needed supplies; place and expedite orders for supplies; verify receipt of supplies; track spending against budget and report to Program Director.

Coordinate schedules of ongoing research projects and experiments. Manage and perform day-to-day laboratory work in conjunction with other lab personnel.


Perform other duties as assigned.


Standard personal computer software; including, but not limited to, spreadsheets and databases. Specialized computer software for acquisition and analysis of flow cytometry data.


Required Qualifications


1. Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences;

2. Minimum of three years of immunology laboratory experience;

3. Demonstrated experience in biosafety level 2 procedures;

4. Demonstrated strong organizational skills;

5. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills;

6. Demonstrated proficiency with oral and written communication skills;

7. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

Preferred Qualifications


1. Demonstrated experience in handling of human blood, body fluid, or tissue specimens;

2. Demonstrated experience in assays of human pathogen-specific cell-mediated immune responses, including cytometry;

3. Demonstrated experience in human lymphocyte cell culture;

4. Demonstrated experience in electronic documentation of laboratory data;

5. Demonstrated experience in training laboratory staff;

6. Demonstrated experience working under GLP practices.
